The temple Toji-in was founded in 1341 as the family temple of the Ashikaga shogunate. Built by Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) as a branch of Toji-ji Temple. Takauji was interred here after his death. The western garden is designed for strolling and incorporates Kinugasa-yama (mountain) into the scenery. On the northern side of the garden is a Teahouse once frequented by Ashikaga Yoshimasa.
